Rick Rescorla

Born in Hayle in 1939, Rick Rescorla enlisted in the US. Army in 1963. He served in Vietnam and was given the nickname "Hard Core" for his bravery in battle, and was revered for his good humour and compassion towards his men. He went on to become a US Citizen but made regular visits back to his home town of Hayle.

Rick he worked in corporate security for investment giant Morgan Stanley. When terrorists bombed the World Trade Centre in 1993, Rescorla was instrumental in evacuating the building. He was literally the last man out. He did research and warned authorities that he expected another attack, but was ignored. At Rescorla's insistence, all employees practiced quarterly emergency evacuations.

On September 11, 2001 American Airlines Flight 11 hit World Trade Centre, Rick Rescorla ignored 'officials' foolish advice to stay put and began the orderly evacuation of Morgan Stanley's 3,800 employees

After having reached safety, Rescorla returned to the building to rescue others still inside. He was last seen heading up the stairs of the tenth floor of the collapsing Tower. His remains have never been recovered. He leaves a wife and two children.

A memorial service was held for Rick at St Elwyns Church Hayle, and a memorial stone erected by Penpol Creek.
